One of the world's only technology providers serving boththe civilian and military markets, Thales UK is a key participant in an extensive range of major aircraft programmes. Guiding, protecting, equipping, tracking, controlling – Thales’s technology is making fixed and rotary wing aircraft of all types safer and more efficient, all around the world.
Air training and flight simulators
Flight simulation is a major and well established exportmarket for Thales UK. We have, over many years, developed solutions for an enormous range of famous aircraft from as far back as the Comet, through Concorde, to our latest full flight simulators for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus 380. There are nearly 600 Thales flight simulators in daily use around the world.
Air safety and traffic management
Thales is a world leader in Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, services and equipment, including radar and navigation aids. In the UK, the company is a major supplier of both ATM and instrument landing systems for military airfields, as well providing mission support systems for many of the RAF aircraft. These capabilities, combined with our expertise of air command and control systems, give Thales the strengths needed to play a role in future UK military air traffic and airbase management systems.
These in-depth skills and resources also mean that Thales is ideally equipped to meet the developing needs of the many civil airports which are expanding their operations across the UK.
Thales’s ATM systems are now widely recognised as the industry standard, with our Eurocat ATM system now in service at more than 260 air traffic control centres around the globe.
Avionics and sensors
Thales provides a wide range of communications, navigation and cockpit display systems for all manner of military aircraft including Future Lynx, the A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport, the Future Strategic TankerAircraft, Nimrod MRA4, Sentinel, A400M, Tornado and Hawk.
In addition, Thales designed and manufactures the Eurofighter Typhoon Infrared Search and Track system, soon to be in service with the RAF.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
Thales is a key player in the UAV market; one of the most dynamic growth sectors for military and civilian aerospace. We are also the lead partner in ASTRAEA (Autonomous Systems Technology Related AirborneEvaluation and Assessment), a major government/industry initiative that’s tasked with developing ways for UAVs to operate in the civil airspace.
Airline services
Thales owns and operates a state-of-the-art centralised repair facility in Leicester, which draws on the combined skills of several different business units to offer an Airbus avionics repair infrastructure, plus an advanced support facility for other UK-based airline fleets and the business jetcommunity.
Satellite communications
Thales has occupied a leading position in the airborne satellite communications (Satcom) market for nearly two decades, having pioneered the technology with market leader Inmarsat. Key innovations include:
– TopFlight Satcom, a smaller, lighter, more cost-effective satcom system conforming to the latest ARINC-781 standard
– Airborne GSM communications carried over Inmarsat SwiftBroadband
– Broadband internet and personal communications device connectivity solutions for airline passengers complete with billing and revenue management systems
Today, Thales offers a complete Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service that delivers simultaneous voice and data communications services at broadband speeds wherever in the world they are needed.
Total support services
Our customer-focused culture and world-class skills base, coupled with extensive expertise in both the civil and military aerospace industries, means that Thales UK can offer a full range of total support services.
Thales has formed the Total Support Services (TSS) alliance in partnership with Selex Galileo and the Defence Support Group (DSG), to provide an innovative approach to the future provision of military support contracting and through-life support for avionics systems.
