Thales UK provides armed forces with crucial military technology, including sophisticated Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting Acquisition and Reconnaissance (C4ISTAR) defence systems. The aim: to provide a cohesive, rapid response capability to protect our service personnel and defend national interests.

Whether acting as sole supplier or leading a team of specialists as the prime contractor, we’re safeguarding the future with everything from secure communications and command & control systems, through to land and naval electronic warfare systems and even entire warships.

Vehicle systems

Thales’s excellent understanding of the Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) domain, backed with substantial systems integration and programme management skills, supports our ability to provide system of systems capability to armoured vehicle programmes. Such vehicles, equipped with highly secure, integrated communications technology and featuring maximum interoperability can fulfil numerous operational roles; helping forces to be projected faster and more effectively, and in greater security, than ever before.

Soldier systems

Thales is leveraging its system integration skills and extensive knowledge of the dismounted close combat environment to help new, highly integrated technological solutions for use by frontline soldiers. The aim is to maximise the effectiveness, reliability and interconnectedness of equipment, which can include thermal imaging technology, command solutions, communications devices and more, while minimising weight and power requirements.

System of Systems Integration (SOSI)

With our understanding of the defence environment and in-depth systems integration knowledge, Thales UK is in an excellent position to fulfil the SOSI role on major defence programmes – we are already leading the SOSI role for the FRES programme, in which we have partnered with Boeing.

C4ISTAR

Few companies can match Thales UK’s ability to offer end-to-end C4ISTAR solutions. From individual sensors through to complete, deployable systems, and with solutions ranging from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles through to integrated, multi-technology mission systems as fitted in the Royal Navy’s Sea King Mk7 helicopters, Thales is meeting the rapidly evolving needs of our combined armed forces.

Missile systems and electronics

Thales is a leading world supplier of short-range weapon systems. In the UK, we are the prime contractor for the Starstreak High Velocity Missile systems and other major programmes, and we are an important partner in many other initiatives including the VT1 air defence missile and the NLAW anti-armour weapon. This wide range of capabilities supports Thales as a leading company in the UK Team CW (Complex Weapons) – a unique partnering of UK MoD and industry to develop and deliver future missiles for the UK armed forces.

Simulators and pre-deployment training solutions

Working in close collaboration with the UK MoD and military aviation community, Thales has an enviable track record of delivering high performance training solutions through PFIs, right across the defence sector. We provide aircrew training for Lynx Mk7 and Mk9 helicopters and as well as delivering the Tornado Synthetic Training System for GR4 aircrew instruction. In addition, the company is managing training for Tucano, Tornado F3, Jaguar, Tristar, Nimrod, VC-10, C130K and Sea King, under the large FsAST Integrated Aircrew Synthetic Training Service PPP.

Thales also provides advanced simulation technology and facilities for many other important applications including truck driving, the operation of various military vehicles, and small arms training, as well as various pre-deployment training solutions.

Naval systems

Thales’s skills in naval prime contract management, systems integration, command information systems, above-water sensors, sonar, electronic warfare, communications and support services are reflected in a customer base that encompasses over 50 navies and more than 400 warships.

Whole warship design and systems integration

Thales’s proven expertise in project management, concept design, systems integration, platform design, ship weapons systems engineering and commissioning has played a defining role in the design solution of the UK’s Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) programme

Advanced underwater systems

Thales’s sonar expertise covers everything from advanced acoustic arrays through to sophisticated signal processing architectures. We are delivering the world’s most advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) sonar to the Royal Navy, as well as cutting edge electrooptical and electronic warfare technology for submarines. Every submarine periscope and optronic mast used by the Royal Navy from as far back as 1917 has been supplied by Thales.

Above water systems

Our breadth of expertise also extends to above-water sensors and data connectivity technology, including long and medium range radar, and the latest electro-optical sensor systems.

With systems fitted to all major Royal Navy warships and submarines, Thales is an established supplier of radar electronic support measures, which provide essential situational awareness, threat warning, targeting support and tactical intelligence. We are also leading the development of fully integrated communications solutions with the functionality and flexibility needed to support complex maritime, joint and coalition operations.

Maritime safety and security

By combining non-lethal weapons, container security systems and perimeter protection systems, Thales is protecting maritime assets and traffic and helping to combat the threats from terrorism, piracy, smuggling, illegal immigration, pollution and unlicensed resource exploitation.
