Thales in India

RELATED INFORMATION
In the 1950s CSF signed a project for technology transfer for radio equipment on a turnkey basis to build a whole factory in India.

Thales has been active in India for more than 50 years now. The Group enjoys a strong cooperative relationship with the Indian armed forces and has provided equipment, systems and support for numerous platforms in service with the country's land, air and naval forces.

Thales is a supplier of radar, avionics, optronics, communications, electronics warfare and simulators to the Indian Air Force, along with supplying cutting-edge key optronics systems to the Indian Army. Thales has also supplied the Indian Navy with ship-borne and heli-borne sonar, ship-borne surveillance radar and ESM. Thales has full capacity for system integration and prime contractorship for large projects in India.

Thales also has a strong presence in civil aviation (particularly as an equipment supplier for the Airbus airliners in service with Air India and Indian Airlines), and in the air navigation sector, along with in-flight entertainment systems. Thales electronic fare collection systems have also been selected for the Delhi and Calcutta metros.

Until 1992 due to the regulations, foreign companies were not allowed to open 100% subsidiaries in India. Thus, as a part of its multi-domestic strategy, Thales recently expanded its local presence in India, setting up a new company in New Delhi in 2003. The new company, Thales International India Pvt. Ltd., offers a range of IT and support services for local civil and military programs. The office was opened in Le Meridian Commercial Towers with the total number of 2 employees. In 2006, due to the expansion and growth of the company, the office shifted to its new premise in the Statesman House in Central Delhi. In the same year the Mumbai office was opened in order to execute contracts and develop new opportunities.

Rolta Thales Ltd. (RTL) is a joint Venture of Rolta with Thales which was created in 2006, in India. RTL will take advantage of technology transfer from Thales for developing state-of-the-art Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (C4ISTAR) equipment systems to address opportunities in the Defence, Security and Aerospace segments, worldwide.

Thales Software India Pvt. Ltd. was set up in 2006 at Chennai to build a sustainable software production center dedicated exclusively to Thales, with the ability to address the full life cycle of a software project. The aim is to fulfill the need in the huge market for air traffic control software.

In 2007, an office was commissioned at Kochi for achieving direct access with the Indian Navy Customer and to address their field requirements in the shortest possible time. The office's role is to develop the level of new and recurring business with the Indian Navy.
