Earlier in his career, Mr. Howe held a wide variety of positions on both the management and policy sides of the MoD, including a spell in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s.

He also served as a Counsellor in the UK Delegation to NATO, on secondment to the FCO in the early 1980's.

Other career successes include his role the founding Head of the Defence Arms Control Unit, a spell as Private Secretary to Defence Secretary George Younger and his work as a Personnel Director.

John was educated at Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford. He is married to Angela and has two daughters.
