The most important international athletic games in the Netherlands have been organized in Hengelo each year since 1981. Its original name was Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in honour of the best Dutch athlete, who won four gold medals at the 1948 Olympic Games.

In 1983 the games were recognized by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation). The Grand Prix II status was achieved in 1994. For some years now the games are ranked among the top 15 Grand Prix games in the world. The Grand Prix status was awarded by the IAAF in 2003. The event, which is now named the THALES FBK-Games, thanks to the Thales sponsorship, is held at the Fanny Blankers-Koen stadium in Hengelo. (source: www.fbk-games.nl)
