ANESRIF (Agence Nationale d'Études et de Suivi de la Réalisation des Investissements Ferroviaires) today announced the award to Thales of a €268.5 million contract as part of the North Railway Bypass project.
The North Railway Bypass runs from east to west of the country and serves all of the main cities along the axis, including Oran, Algiers, Constantine and Chief.
The project includes the refurbishment of signalling systems on three sections in the north of Algeria: Annaba-Ramdane Djamel, Bordj Bou Arreridj-El Gourzi and El Khémis-Oued Sly. These investments form part of an extensive railway network development programme.
The €268.5 million contract was awarded to a Thales-led consortium including Vossloh-Cogifer and CSEE Alger. It covers the working design, supply, assembly and commissioning of signalling and telecommunications equipment for the three rail sections, amounting to a total of 440 kilometres of double track.
The Thales solution encompasses ETCS Levels 1 and 2 solutions, electronic signalling for some 30 stations, four control centres, telecommunications and security systems.
"This very significant contract strengthens our presence in Algeria and reinforces our position as a leading partner for the modernisation of the country's transport system," said Jean-Pierre Forestier, Vice President, Managing Director of Thales's Rail Signalling business. "Modernisation of these three lines will allow ANESRIF to increase their capacity while enhancing safety by installing new-generation signalling systems from Thales, a world leader in this field."
The award follows earlier recent contracts in Algeria for the refurbishment of the Ain Touta-M'sila and Tizi Ouzou-Oued Aissi lines, and confirms Thales's leadership position in the rail transportation market. The company has also been selected to provide the integrated ticketing system for the Algiers metro.
