THE RT HON LORD FREEMAN
Chairman, Thales UK
Roger Freeman was elected to the Board of Thales UK Plc (formerly Thomson-CSF Racal) as Chairman in March 1999.

Born in 1942, he was educated at the Whitgift School Croydon and graduated from Balliol College Oxford with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association and Treasurer of the Bow Group.

In 1968 he qualified as a Chartered Accountant with a London firm and, between 1969 and 1985, he was an Executive Director of Lehman Brothers, working from their New York City offices until 1972.

He was a lecturer and Conference Chairman for the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a founder member of the Hundred Group of UK Chartered Accountant Finance Directors.

Roger Freeman was elected as MP for Kettering in June 1983, where he remained until 1997. He also held various ministerial positions including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces at the Ministry of Defence from 1986 to 1988.

He served as Minister of State for Public Transport from 1990 to 1994, where he had responsibility for Public Transport matters, including British Rail, London Transport and the Channel Tunnel, and as Minister of State for Defence Procurement from 1994 to 1995.

In 1995 he entered the Cabinet as Minister for Public Service and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He was responsible for the government's privatisation programme until leaving Parliament in 1997.

Since December 1997, Lord Freeman has been a partner (now a consultant) to PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He has interests in a wide range of organisations, including the Society of British Aerospace Companies and The British International Freight Association.

He has also written books on the benefits of Information Technology for making government more open, efficient and accountable. He is married to Jennifer and has two children: Edmund and Olivia.
