Richard : Bid & Program Management

How does a former academic research physicist become a Bid and then Programme manager for an airborne radar development project ? By a series of attainable career steps, supported by line management via training and mentoring.

I joined Thales as a software engineer working on real-time software, covering everything from requirements to flight trials. A spell in work package management developed the long-term aspiration to become a project manager. My line manager was key in helping me; within a short time I found myself writing a technical document in the Bid phase. We were awarded the contract in January 2000.

From then on I became both Project and Software Manager for the new job and enjoyed pulling all elements of the project together. It was particularly stimulating to work with a much wider range of the company - marketing, commercial, project control - than I had previously. As the team grew it became necessary to concentrate full time on the Project Management and a dedicated Software Manager was brought in. I am now back on what was my first activity at Thales - but as a Programme Manager.
