After twenty years in a defence environment, with varied experience and a job change on average every four years, I decided in 2002 to take up the challenge of becoming Financial Director at Thales Security Systems. Avoiding routine, that's been the watchword during my career in the Group. Every job I've had has been a project being designed or launched. My role here has been to bring four small firms together into a single legal entity with a single accounting system. The main difference between the IT&S and Defence businesses is the fierce international competition, which makes it really hard to produce reliable forecasts. Order bookings are always uncertain, and although the contracts are for less impressive amounts, there are many more of them. Never mind, that's just another of those challenges I like.
