INFRARAIL, NEC Birmingham - Thales announced that it has signed an agreement with the Shanghai Metro to provide world-leading SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) for the automatic operation of the city's new Line 7 and its Northern Extension.

Line 7 starts from Jinqiu Road Station in the north-west area of Shanghai, through the city centre, to Longyang Road Station in the Pudong area, with a length of 34 km and servicing 28 stations. The Northern Extension runs from the north of Jinqiu Road Station, through Gucun, to Luodian Station in the Luodian New Town area, with a length of 10 km and servicing 5 stations.

Shanghai Shentong Group Co. awarded the two contracts valued at euros 42 millions (RMB 434 millions) to a consortium of Thales Rail Signalling Solutions, Alcatel Shanghai Bell and Shanghai Automation Instrumentation Co.

"This is our fourth consecutive win in Shanghai following the awards for Lines 6, 8 and 9 indicating great trust in our world-leading technology. The SelTrac CBTC system has been developed and implemented successfully in many cities throughout the world over the past 20 years. Operators have benefited from low operating and maintenance costs, optimal life cycle costs and proven driverless technology inherent with SelTrac technology," said Jean-Pierre Forestier, Vice-President, Managing Director of Thales Rail Signalling activity.

This contract further leverages Thales' expertise in serving the urban rail industry and confirms Thales' worldwide leading position in the supply of fully automated train control and communications solutions.
