When the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC)TM event was launched in January 2007, Thales was brought on board to ensure that people had appropriate access to the right areas, at all times.
The event, which stretched over 10 months from start to finish, brought together 21 member nations, including world leaders and dignitaries from across the Asia Pacific region, for a series of major business and economic events, involving thousands of people moving across 20 sites nationwide.
Throughout 2007, Thales deployed a customised turnkey integrated Accreditation and Security Access Control System (ASACS), safeguarding a vast and diverse international contingent of world leaders, government ministers, officials and media as they followed the course of APEC Australia 2007 around the country.
Thales worked in co-operation with the Australian government's regulatory and law enforcement agencies to provide seamless and unobtrusive access control for delegates, delivered to over 20 locations across Australia. ASACS provided over 70,000 credentials for venue workforce, security, domestic and international media and delegates, as well as all event vehicles. It enabled the smooth and secure delivery of all APEC activities and events, limiting access to venues and areas exclusively to attendees with the appropriate level of authorisation.
ASACS combines accreditation, online portals, biometrics, databases, IT security, high security data centres, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware purchases, staffing, project management and systems integration with key departments and law enforcement agencies. The ASACS database provides "hardened" secure data services for the receipt, collation, assessment, distribution and overall management of identity credential data.
Thales was awarded the PSI (Prime System Integrator) contract to provide secure accreditation and access control for APEC participants, by the Commonwealth of Australia's APEC 2007 TM Taskforce (a division within the Australian department of Prime Minister & Cabinet).
The challenge was heightened during Leaders Week in Sydney (2-9 September 2007), which required 24-hour support for some days, as well as co-ordinating equipment deliveries and set-up at four simultaneous venues, handling thousands of late registrations, and dealing with increased security sensitivity and significant media scrutiny of security, the accreditation and access control system.
"APEC TM facilitated Thales's establishment of a ‘Critical Site & Major Event Security Centre of Excellence' with wide application for future APEC meetings, as well as other major events and critical site security solutions in Australia and New Zealand," says Pierre Maciejowski, vice-president with Thales in Australia.
"The system and services provided to APEC Australia 2007TM brought together best of breed technology, excellent project management, planning and knowhow," Maciejowski adds.
