In fall of 2007, ITT was awarded a contract from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to support its Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) System, a major milestone in the FAA's plans for a comprehensive modernization of the U.S. air traffic management system. As a partner in the bid, Thales was subsequently awarded a contract from ITT to provide the supply and life-cycle support of ADS-B radios for the ITT team.
The period of performance for the initial contract is three years, with a contract value of up to $40 million depending upon options exercised. The contract has a potential value with all options exercised of up to $140 million.
The opportunity to partner with ITT on this contract is substantial for Thales for several reasons. Not only does our participation reinforce our position as the world's leading supplier of ADS-B technology, but it also provides Thales a critical role in the first major NextGen contract awarded by the FAA. Thales's participation in fulfilling the contract also solidifies our partnership with ITT and opens the door for further collaboration. As a current supplier of nearly all of the FAA's Navaids for several decades, the collaboration on this contract will also raise awareness of Thales's presence in the U.S. The FAA's stamp of approval remains a gold standard around the world so being on the winning team will help our business overseas as well.
This contract win will secure existing jobs at our air traffic management facility in Shawnee, KS and create new jobs there and throughout our supply chain. (The exact number of new jobs created will be determined as contract requirements are fulfilled.) Thales is confident that, in conjunction with the ITT team, our legacy in the air traffic management area will provide immediate and long-term value for the FAA NextGen program.
