To supervise its facilities, RTE relies on a computer network built around industrial-strength real-time data acquisition systems that cover the entire length and breadth of France. In 2006 Thales was selected to supply an end-to-end supervision and control solution for the perimeter security devices employed to protect RTE's computer network. Designed to strengthen perimeter intrusion detection (to prevent software piracy and virus attacks) as well as safeguard against technical incidents, the Thales solution gathers real-time data collected in the field at a security operations control centre. This centralised system enables at-a-glance supervision by security teams and efficient response coordination in the event of an incident.
To optimise operational continuity at the centre, Thales helped RTE develop and implement automatic backup procedures at a remote data centre several miles away from the main control centre. The full system was recently delivered to RTE under optimum safety and security conditions, with Thales ensuring service continuity and uninterrupted electricity distribution.
"RTE chose Thales for its broad understanding of the energy supply and distribution sector. Thales deployed its comprehensive solution while ensuring the high level of availability that was critical to our network throughout the migration. Thanks to this expertise, we now have a more efficient, unified set-up for guaranteeing optimum security across our information systems," said Frédéric Lenoir, security architect at RTE's Remote Control Information Systems.
A leading supplier of mission critical systems, Thales has provided supervision, control and security solutions to the global energy sector for over 30 years. Thales counts several major international operators among its customer base, including Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Sonatrach, Pemex and Gaz de France.
