07  March  2008
Thales and Diehl Aerospace today announced that Thales has been selected by Airbus to provide the common Remote Data Concentrators (cRDC) which, together with the Core Processing Input/Output Modules
... (CPIOM), serve as the two main building blocks within the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) suite for the new long-range, wide-body Airbus A350 XWB. The development and production of the cRDCs will be carried out by Diehl Aerospace, the Joint Venture Company formed by Thales and Diehl in 2000.

The cRDC is an avionics unit generally installed outside of the avionics bays. It is used to concentrate data from/ to analogue and discrete Inputs/Outputs remotely (i.e. in proximity to associated sensors, actuators). It then communicates this data to/ from computer processing resources on the aircraft.

Using new technologies, the Thales and Diehl Aerospace common RDC replaces a significant number of Input/ Output units previously specific for each on-board application. At the IMA platform level, while hosting 50% more functions, the new A350 CPIOM and cRDC mean that the number of Part Numbers required is halved, leading to significant gains in direct maintenance costs (repairs, spares etc).

Manfred Kennel, President and Director of Diehl Aerospace commented, "with the responsibility for the development of the new A350 IMA suite units, Thales and Diehl Aerospace are in a position to bring additional added value to Airbus through active support of the global optimisation of the platform."

As a reminder, the cRDC selection adds to the previous selections announced by Thales at the beginning of the year for the Interactive Control and Display Systems and the Air Data and Inertial Reference Unit for the new A350 XWB aircraft. This batch of selections is expected to generate up to 2 billion euros in revenues over the first 20 years of in-service life for the aircraft, which is scheduled to enter service in 2013.
