Focus on Flexnet, Software Defined Radio

RELATED INFORMATION
Thales and Rockwell Collins presented their FlexNet solution the 16th of June. It is the first Software Defined Radio (SDR) available in the international market.

Following the announcement of a strategic agreement at Eurosatory 2006, Thales and Rockwell Collins combined their strengths to develop and market the next generation of Software Communication Architecture (SCA) radios that are optimized to meet new operational requirements.

Those flexible and scalable tactical platform will be the core of the future tactical communication nodes, the essence of a true mobile tactical Internet network. It offers the basic services of existing radio terminals, but also new elaborated networking services such as communication radio node functions. Thanks to their technological experiences as well as a good knowledge of clients needs, Thales and Rockwell Collins integrated complex technology and designed cost effective solutions to the customer's benefits.

Basically, Flexnet is a wideband vehicular SDR, connecting Forces with the mobile high data rate ad hoc network. It provides narrow band and a wide band (NB/WB) radio channels, in order to implement legacy and new high data rate networking waveform. Flexnet is also based on multi-band, multi-mission programmable radios, guaranteeing an easy integration with IP networks and applications.

The FlexNet family includes:
- FlexNet-One compact multi-band high capacity single-channel radio;
- FlexNet-Four versatile multi-band multi-channel radio;
- and FlexNet-Waveform high data rate ad hoc networking waveform (supported by FlexNet-One and FlexNet-Four).

FlexNet was presented for the fisrt time during Eurosatory, the largest international exhibition dedicated to land and joint defence sector, the16-20th of June 2008.
