Thales Helps Deliver Canada’s First Vessel Under National Shipbuilding Strategy

Selected at the beginning of the NSS to deliver the electronic systems for the construction of non-combat vessels, Thales is pleased to celebrate the delivery of the first operational vessel, the Sir John Franklin, to the Canadian Coast Guard.

The delivery of the Sir John Franklin Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel marks a tremendous milestone for the project, as it is the first large vessel built and delivered to the Government of Canada under the NSS.

Under the NSS, Thales has generated significant economic impact across the country, working with more than 70 suppliers from coast-to-coast, across eight provinces, and, in 2018 investing more than $1 million in Canada’s maritime sector.

“Thales, along with our key suppliers, have worked tirelessly to deliver this important vessel as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy”, said Mark Halinaty, President & CEO of Thales Canada. “We are proud to be a Tier 1 partner of choice to Seaspan Shipyards and will continue to do our part to enable the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy to have the best available technology at every decisive moment”.

Thales is an important part of the NSS, responsible for the selection, procurement and integration of the electronic systems and equipment on the vessels being constructed, in addition to the design, development and installation activities. Thales is contracted by Seaspan Shipyards as the Electronics Systems Integrator for three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels, two Joint Support Ships, and one Offshore Oceanographic Science vessel.
