NAIDOC Week - Adam Bush
As a Biripi man from the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Adam Bush’s journey to his current role as Strategy Principal, Maritime at Thales Australia is a testament to resilience, leadership, and a commitment to social justice.
After leaving high school in Year 11 and working in a few different roles, he joined the Royal Australian Navy, embarking on a career journey spanning over 25 years. Starting out as an Electronic Warfare Linguist, Adam then re-trained and learnt how to drive ships, eventually returning back to Intelligence, where he spent two decades developing his skills working within the national security space. His career in the Navy provided him with invaluable insights and experiences that have shaped his professional life.
After his time in the Navy, Adam moved into politics, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective shaped by his Indigenous heritage. This background instilled in him a profound understanding of social justice and compassion for people from all walks of life, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognising that not everyone has the same tools or opportunities when growing up and in their life.
Joining Thales has been a positive and welcoming experience for Adam. “I’ve been able to just be myself since day one,” he reflects, appreciating the inclusive environment that respects his identity as both an Indigenous Australian and a veteran. Despite being relatively new, Adam has already made significant contributions, leveraging his strategic acumen and commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion.
In his previous role, Adam was passionate about mentoring Indigenous staff, helping them navigate the workplace and sharing his career path. He firmly believes in the power of representation, often saying, “If you can see it, you can be it.” This philosophy drives him to inspire others, particularly First Nations people, to pursue their aspirations regardless of their circumstances.
Adam finds this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Loud and Proud," particularly resonant. He acknowledges the sense of sadness felt by the First Nations community post the Voice but remains positive in the belief they still have a voice that deserves to be heard and respected. “We deserve to participate and have a place in society, strengthening the importance of continued advocacy and visibility for Indigenous peoples.”
Looking ahead, Adam’s aspirations are both straightforward and philosophical. He aims to be happy and healthy, mentally stimulated, and professionally satisfied. His curiosity drives him to stay engaged and continuously learn. Adam is committed to remaining in people-centric roles, finding great satisfaction in the camaraderie among colleagues and the opportunity to lead and uplift others. “Don’t pull the ladder up behind you,” he shares with peers.
To his colleagues, Adam is always open to a yarn and ready to offer advice. His message to the broader First Nations community is one of encouragement and resilience: “Keep reaching, keep asking to be in the room, keep pushing yourself, and believe in yourself 110%. Stay curious and learn as much as you can.”
