Thales is a major partner in Africa and is supplying rail signalling systems for mainline and urban line, ticketing solutions for urban rail and mobile communications to several countries in Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa).
In Egypt, Thales is supplying Fare Collection systems for Line 1, 2 and 3 of Cairo metro.
In May 2013, Thales was awarded a contract valued at over €100 million by Egyptian National Railways for the modernisation of the signalling systems on the Cairo-Alexandria corridor, targeting completion in 2017. The Cairo-Alexandria railway line is 208km long and is currently the busiest section of the Egyptian Railways network.
