International Women in Engineering Day – Thales offers excellent entry and career opportunities for women in the technical sector

The International Women in Engineering Day takes place on June 23rd every year. This week at Thales, our particular focus is on women in technical professions and especially in engineering.

„We are convinced that we achieve the best results with mixed teams“,

says Bernd Schopp, Vice President of Human Resources at Thales Deutschland, explaining our commitment to gender diversity. “This is why we have invited young women from the technical professions to this event today. We want to show them the diverse career prospects at Thales, give them an insight into our leading international technology company and show them how they can contribute to making the world safer together with us every day. We specifically chose an exclusive setting with chosen participants, because this enables us to give the young women a great deal of attention, to respond to them individually and to look after and advise them.

Thales is proactive in promoting gender equality. Our aim is to get women interested in technical professions and the technology industry, to win them over to our company and to support them in shaping their careers. Today we invited mainly young women to our headquarters in Ditzingen near Stuttgart, women who have already decided on a technical career. The motto was “Women in Top Technology – A Morning for Students and Young Professionals at Thales Deutschland”, and the focus was on the further planning and shaping of their careers.

In his welcome speech, Bernd Schopp motivated the young women to actively shape their own careers and to gather first-hand information from our colleagues who accompany them during the event.

Our female colleagues from the various business units presented the Thales world and our exciting technology portfolio during our technology tours in the Innovation Center. They also showed the young women how Thales employees can create real added value for society – whether it involves transporting millions of passengers safely every day on planes and trains to their destinations all over the world, enabling space missions or effectively countering cyber threats.

During the subsequent panel discussion, women from very different professional backgrounds gave the young visitors specific career tips and told them about their own work experiences.

What prospects do women have with a technology leader like Thales? How can I optimally prepare for my career entry or the next career step? And what tips can successful women pass on? Our colleagues discussed these and similar questions, motivating the guests and sharing valuable personal experiences from their own professional careers. The discussions continued during a meal enjoyed together in our company restaurant.

Then came the Market Place, where the interaction with our colleagues from very different professional fields and business units increased rapidly. In personal conversations, our guests were once again able to exchange ideas with our female colleagues on an individual basis and find out even more about our various fields of activity. Our recruiting team also advised the ladies on career entry and personal development opportunities at Thales, informed them about current vacancies and gave them solid advice on how best to join us.

The feedback was again very positive. Last year we introduced this event format for the first time, and we were able to achieve numerous candidates for internships, graduation theses and direct career entry. This year, we hope that again many talented participants choose Thales for their careers.

All around the globe Thales organizes events for women in technical areas this week. Want to learn more? Diversity at Thales Deutschland

Thales thrives on the diversity of its employees – a diversity which has a decisive influence on the company and its success. This is why we’ve been dealing intensively with this topic for a long time now. Equal professional opportunities for women and men of all nationalities, age groups and backgrounds, as well as a good work-life balance are a matter of course for us – and thanks to our special programmes we promote diversity and the compatibility of work and private life. We also support our employees in balancing their family life with the exciting challenges Thales provides.

Diversity, especially gender diversity, is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy and we take appropriate measures to attract qualified women in a targeted manner and to support them in shaping their careers in our company. We also provide comprehensive programmes for a good work-life balance, which of course benefits both female and male employees.

In addition to its Group-wide programmes and initiatives, Thales Deutschland is also involved in numerous local projects. Since October 2011, for example, we have been a signatory to the Diversity Charter, we are a pact partner of the nationwide initiative “Komm, mach MINT” (Mathematics, Computer Science, Science and Technology) and we actively participate in activities such as the annual Girls’ Day to get girls interested in a technical profession.
