Saving natural resources

In 2007, we announced a strategy to reduce our consumption of natural resources. Since then, we have taken concrete steps to achieve this goal, including regular campaigns to raise awareness among employees. Their efforts have had a major impact.

Proof in the numbers

  • 26% reduction in worldwide water consumption between 2008 and 2015.
  • 17% decrease in energy consumption between 2008 and 2015.
  • 19% of electricity usage from renewable energy sources in 2016.

Cutting out waste

We do everything possible to reduce the waste we send to landfills, from selective sorting and recycling to producing less waste in the first place. Employee education is key. Dedicated areas are set aside for collecting and storing hazardous waste, and our industrial processes are optimised to keep all kinds of waste to a minimum.

Emissions control

Our goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are particularly ambitious. First we calculate exactly how much gas we are emitting. Then we work against this baseline to cut our energy consumption, in particular by renovating older buildings. We have also adopted a Green IT policy to make our IT systems more energy-efficient.
We encourage employees to use greener forms of transport — and our efforts here are also paying off, with a 13% reduction in related CO2 emissions since 2010.

Global reporting initiative

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a non-profit organization that promotes economic sustainability. It produces one of the world's most prevalent standards for sustainability reporting. GRI seeks to make sustainability reporting by all organizations as routine as, and comparable to, financial reporting. For the environmental reporting, it proposes 30 indicators, among which 17 are core indicators.

Here is the correlation between Thales indicators that can be found in the Environmental report and the Global Initiative Reporting ones.
