London Underground Ltd. (LUL) is using Thales’ SelTrac® CBTC to modernise London’s Underground signalling infrastructure on the Jubilee and Northern Line upgrade programmes.
The overall purpose is to carry more customers faster, safely and in greater comfort through enhanced capacity and reliability resulting in increased growth for London Underground.
Jubilee Line upgrade
Thales’s innovative SelTrac® CBTC computer-based signalling system now controls 37 kilometres of track and 27 stations on London Underground’s Jubilee Line.
SelTrac® increases safety and efficiency by automating control of trains, and has already helped increase capacity on the Jubilee Line by over 20%. Thales is working on enhancing the system to reach a total increase in capacity of 40%.
Northern Line upgrade
Thales’ SelTrac® CBTC system is the innovative solution that London Underground are using to replace the 40-year-old legacy signalling on the Northern Line.
All 106 of the Northern Line trains have been fitted with the system that includes a new display in the driver’s cab and a new interface for the train operators. The Northern Line upgrade has reduced passenger journey times by 18%.
Four Lines Modernisation Programme (4LM)
Thales is delivering an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system for four of London Underground’s Sub Surface Rail (SSR) lines: District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City.
This comprehensive solution includes management, design, development, manufacturing, supply, delivery, construction, installation, integration, testing, commissioning and migration. The 4LM programme is designed to deliver this work.
4LM will be based on the IS Radio product which merges the software developed as a bespoke solution for the Jubilee and Northern Line upgrade contract.
