S2P - Smart Plastic Products

Founded in 2014, Smart Plastic Products (S2P) emerged almost naturally from its surrounding environment – France’s “Plastics Valley”,

in and around Oyonnax. The startup began life as a spin-off of the IPC (plastics processing technical centre), with a 10-strong team of engineers and developers working on ways to bring smart added value to plastic products.

S2P’s technologies enable electronic systems and functions to be integrated directly into all kinds of plastic parts, and most notably those that have complex curved or three-dimensional shapes. By turning the traditional model on its head – adapting the electronics to the part, rather than the other way round – S2P is able to free itself from previous industry constraints of size and shape. The technology provides both economic and technical benefits, since making the electronics an integral part of the plastic allows the miniaturisation of a broad range of systems, from antennas and sensors to anti-intrusion surfaces and fuses for pyrotechnics, and it can be applied to any type of electronics.

The obvious applications that the technology has in meeting companies’ needs in the highly complex and technical fields of aerospace and defence meant that S2P was on Thales’s radar screen very early on, resulting in collaboration across the Group on a variety of different prototypes. Managing director Maël Moguedet has high hopes for VivaTech 2019: “It is an opportunity for us not only to strengthen our partnership with Thales and its teams, but also to generate new ideas and new relationships with other companies.”
