Thales has played a major role in ensuring Poland’s rail network. For a number of years the company has been involved in implementing the latest rail signalling technologies, with the first major project completed being the Poznań Railway Node.

Thales is the first company in Poland to successfully implemented the ETCS (European Train Control System) level 1 system. Designed and delivered by Thales, the system services 225 km of the CMK line, between Grodzisk Mazowiecki and Zawiercie. The main purpose of this investment was to improve safety and increase the maximum speed of trains up to 200 km/h.

Thales systems control railway traffic on a portion of the line which is over 800 km long. On another 900 km of track, Thales is implementing modern rail signalling systems. The most important modernisation works are taking place on lines connecting Warsaw with the Tricity region and Łódź, as well as the E30 line, on the Katowice-Kraków-Rzeszów route.

Systems and devices offered by Thales are also used by the Railway Institute. Thales built the ETCS level 1 system on the test rail track in Żmigród. The investment broadens the testing capabilities in the certification processes conducted by the Railway Institute.

In 2005, PKP PLK included the Thales in the group of ten largest companies that are performing contracts accounting for a total of 93% of all investment expenditure.
