Thales to modernize the Alicante TRAM Line 5 for better service

8th February 2021 - Thales begins the adaptation of Line 5, in the Sangueta-Puerta del Mar (Postiguet Beach) section, of the Alicante TRAM metropolitan network that belongs to Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGV).

The scope of the works will include the expansion and modernization of the signalling and traffic control facilities to be carried out by Thales, allowing the commercial operation of line 5 in a safer, more flexible and reliable way. To undertake these actions, Thales will carry out the work without the need for service interruption, providing mobility continuity to the passengers on this line.

TRAM Line 5, which is 8.7 kilometers long connects the center of Alicante with the district of Playa de San Juan, was put into service in June 2019. This new service improves the connection with the areas of Postiguet beach, Levante dock, Alicante Port, Esplanade, Town Hall and the historic centre.

Since its inception, Thales has supported FGV on different TRAM lines, with the implementation of various signalling systems, among which are electronic interlockings and Centralized Traffic Control in service since 2005.

The Alicante Tram, which had more than seven million passengers on its six lines in 2020, has contributed to improving the movements of citizens, being a fundamental element of smart and sustainable mobility.
