After graduating from Cambridge University in 1982 with an MA and PhD in Physics, Alvin joined Marconi Space & Defence Systems as a Systems Engineer.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, he worked on defence programmes such as DLH (Naval Off-board Decoy) and the Eurofighter Typhoon Defensive Aids SubSystem. He was also involved in civil programmes such as the video-telephone developed for BT. In parallel, he gained an MSc in Mathematics and an MBA from the Open University.
Since leaving Marconi and before joining Thales in April 2010, Alvin held a number of senior technical and managerial roles, including:
- Technical Director, PRI Ltd
- General Manager, GEC Hirst Research Centre
- Technical & Quality Director, Astrium
- Engineering Director, Meggitt Avionics
- Capability Director, BAE Systems Avionics Group
- Managing Director, Selex EW & Battlespace business
Presently the Vice President Research, Technical & Innovation (RTI) for Thales UK, Alvin's responsibilities include the Thales Research & Technology Centre in Reading (TRT) and the Innovation Hub facility at Crawley.
The RTI's mission is to be a catalyst for growth in Thales, innovating with our customers and "open innovation" partners, and incubating new technology and business offerings to respond to critical business challenges.
Alvin also chairs the Defence R&T Group of Intellect, is a fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Royal Aeronautical Society and is a Chartered Engineer.
