#GetInspired for a career in STEM

Thales is hard at work promoting the exciting career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), whilst continuing to invest in the engineering skills needed for the future growth of the transport industry.
Determined to challenge perceptions of STEM subjects, from stereotyping to gender equality, Thales graduates and apprentices have been eagerly attending exhibitions and events, helping to give young people the skills and knowledge needed to make an informed decision about their educational choices and future career options.
Inspiring prospective students at a recent Prospects College of Advanced Technology (ProCAT) open day, which involved enthusiastically showcasing projects and supporting viewings of their training facility, Thales apprentices have come together  to prepare for Skills London, the capital’s biggest jobs and careers event for young people, taking place 13-14 November 2015 at ExCel, Docklands.
Skills London 2015
Thales is proud to be participating at Skills London for the third consecutive year and this time, attendees will be able to visit two stands manned and supported by Thales apprentices, ready to discuss their experiences in engineering and the transport industry, as well as giving advice on getting into a STEM career. Interns and graduates will also be on hand to answer any burning questions visitors may have.
The team not only wanted to actively encourage the learning of STEM subjects and career opportunities, but to help empower young people with fun ideas and concepts developed by them as part of their apprenticeships. The first stand at the event will feature a demonstration of Thales’s Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS), alongside one of two creative competition-style projects crafted by apprentices, called ‘Train Race’. The second stand will showcase an additional apprentice project, ‘The Building Block Circuit’ game; the aim of both to give visitors an insight into the sort of tasks that are often involved with an apprenticeship at Thales.
Scores and times for both the apprentice competitions will also be recorded over the course of the two days, and the winner of each will get their hands on a Kindle Fire!
Further Opportunities
Thales technology is at the heart of Britain’s transport infrastructure - urban, main line and roads, delivering safety, security, reliability and capacity benefits for operators and their passengers all over the country. Partnering with Prospects College of Advanced Technology (ProCAT), to deliver its transport focussed apprenticeship scheme, Thales works to develop the skills of the next generation of engineers across a broad range of disciplines including signalling, telecommunications and systems testing.
With eighty apprentices and graduates currently being trained and developed in the Ground Transportation business, a commitment has been put forward to train a further twenty apprentices and a similar number of graduates in 2016. This hugely attractive scheme fully employs apprentices from day one and supports them to complete a three to four year rail engineering apprenticeship together with a BTEC in Electrical Engineering.
Think you might have what it takes?
Would you be interested in becoming a Thales apprentice or graduate next year? Come and meet our apprentices at Skills London on 13-14 November 2015 on stand number 201 and Get Skilled stand number 2 to learn about opportunities and get inspired! You can also meet representatives from the college where our apprentices carry out their classroom based-learning and spend time in the Thales-sponsored rail academy complete with full size platform, track, passenger information system, CCTV and trackside equipment! Come and talk to us, or go to Thales UK Early Carreers to find out more.
