Global role for Plymouth as focus of underwater expertise

In the complex and highly-demanding world of building and operating manned and unmanned submarines and submersibles, MSubs are acknowledged as a market leader.

UK Maritime Autonomy Centre

The news that Thales and MSubs have agreed to work at the new UK Maritime Autonomy Centre at Plymouth brings together a combined knowledge of underwater expertise that is second to none.

MSubs and its sister company Submergence Group, specialise in the design, manufacture, and operation of manned and unmanned submersibles for military and commercial markets.

Operating from Plymouth and Round Rock Texas, this highly-specialised team has the ability to design, manufacture and operate a range of underwater platforms for a range of customers worldwide.

MSubs Ltd (Marlin Submarines Ltd.) has been designing and producing manned submarines and submersibles since 1986. MSubs’ early diesel-electric submarines focused on ease-of-use and were operated as private pleasure craft, scientific research vessels, and military training vessels.

In the 1990s MSubs designed and built submersibles for blockbuster movie production and scientific research. More recently, MSubs has designed, built, and operated specialised submersibles supporting deep dive and long-endurance operations for research and military vessels.

The company’s unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) hull designs are based on its manned submersibles, enabling most systems and components to be within the pressure hull. This enables its UUV’s to be maintained and replenished without recovery, reducing turnaround time.

MSubs’ range of different UUVs can be used for a variety of international navies for anti-submarine warfare training, threat detection, acoustic target testing, countermeasure and torpedo system testing.
