Thales to enhance UK nuclear power station emergency response with new Deployable Communication & Information System

Following the Fukushima event in Japan, EDF-Energy NGL undertook a rigorous assessment of the resilience of its fleet of UK nuclear power stations against the highly unlikely occurrence of an extreme weather or other natural event. Part of a suite of safety enhancements is the provision of a mobile emergency response capability that could be deployed should such an event occur.

more than 25 years’ experience of working with the UK nuclear power industry …"

The Deployable Communication & Information System will provide a deployable containerised capability to monitor critical plant systems and relay essential data through a resilient communications network. The system will allow operators to access, monitor, communicate, analyse, and act upon the critical data. Ultimately, the system will provide emergency response decision makers with the information that they need to make the best possible decisions.

Thales has extensive experience in delivering safety critical, resilient communication and information systems to critical infrastructure, including nuclear energy facilities, around the world.

Phil Naybour, Vice President of Secure Communications and Information Systems for Thales UK, said, “Thales is delighted to build on more than 25 years’ experience of working with the UK nuclear power industry to deliver an advanced situational awareness solution that will further enhance the UK’s outstanding reputation for the safety of nuclear power plants.

Delivering this nuclear emergency response capability will reinforce Thales’s position as a leading global provider of secure communications and information systems and services.”

Notes to Editors
Thales will provide 5 sets of containerised DCIS by 31st March 2014.

The design utilises Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment, has a low through-life support footprint and will provide EDF-Energy NGL with an assured, rapidly deployable communications capability, in the highly unlikely event that a response to an emergency event should be required.

Thales will enable EDF-Energy NGL to deliver the regulatory requirement to deploy resilient communications as part of wider ranging capabilities to recover from an extreme natural event in the UK.
