#ThalesArduino: and the winner is...

This year's award-winning #ThalesArduino competition has come to an end, with Team Trigger Cats from the California Institute of Technology scooping the coveted top spot.
After an extremely tough competition, the top two projects in both the UK and the US this year were selected, before project videos were opened up to public voting. The four videos battled it out to be crowned this year’s overall winner based on the public vote and it was Team Trigger Cats that stole the show, each winning a Pebble Smart Watch.
Team members Aritra Biswas, Frederick Berl, Yongkyun Daniel Lee, Cormac O'Neill and Carlos Gonzalez designed and created a stabilisation system that can prevent combat vehicles in combat zones from suddenly rolling or flipping due to sudden external forces.
They were up against fierce competition when it came to the projects created, including a bomb disposal robot complete with a mechanical hand, a modified chair that can be used to speed up take-off and landing of commercial airliners and an intelligent tracking system which can be used to detect and eliminate combatants in hostile situations.

The ThalesArduino initiative encourages engineering students to put their skills into creatively developing an Arduino based concept, and is as such an important way to develop the Group’s attractiveness to potential new talent. Starting in 2014 in the UK, the competition was expanded to the USA in 2015; this year winning 'Best Candidate Interaction' at the 2016 Recruitment Advertising Design (RAD) awards in the UK, for “totally engaging” with its audience and its contribution to a 60% increase in engineering applications at Thales in the UK. Next year the competition will incorporate several more countries across Europe, Asia and elsewhere.
