Thales supplies ETCS level 2 on-board equipment to Softronic in Romania

The locomotive manufacturer Softronic from Romania commissioned Thales with the delivery and equipping of five LEMA locomotives with ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 2 and PZB vehicle equipment for transnational operation in Romania, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. The vehicles will also be equipped with the national train control system MIREL that will be implemented by the HMH company from Slovenia.

The LEMA 6000 kW have been designed for universal use and are suitable for the traction of very heavy trains that, among others, operate on heavily icy or snow- and leaf-covered tracks. The electric locomotives can operate in cross-border traffic throughout the European Union, on routes with an overhead line voltage of 15kV or 25kV.

“We are very pleased about this first ETCS Level 2 on-board system project in the Balkans as it opens up new possibilities for further business activities in a high-potential ETCS market”, says Markus Fritz, VP, Main Line Signalling Domain Germany, Thales Deutschland.“ Together with our partner Softronic, we lay the foundation of a successful and long-term cooperation in the Romanian market, and thus shape the future of modern and safe rail transportation“, Fritz continues.

“Becoming a Softronic’s partner in one of our first ETCS Level 2 on-board system in Europe makes us very proud and makes us build a path to new opportunities for helping our customer modernizing railways in Romania”, says Claudiu-Vasile Seicean Managing Director Main Line Signalling Domain Romania at Thales.
