The civil aerospace revolution

Future Thales products will help to reconcile the needs of pilots and controllers with those of passengers and the environment.

  • increasingly complex technological requirements,
  • mission parameters, safety and environmental standards in the air,
  • need to control airspace in ever more crowded skies from the ground,

Tomorrow’s aerospace industry will need to undergo a revolution.

Avionics 2020, the cockpit of the future

Avionics 2020 incarnates a new-generation cockpit :

  • founded on the principles of natural and direct hands-on interaction and human-machine interfaces,
  • designed to serve the pilot through the use of the latest head-up and head-down technologies.

Avionics 2020 is the result of a number of partnerships, spearheaded by Thales over a number of years with researchers, scientific institutions and world-class experts to refine its understanding in the field of human-machine interfaces. These efforts culminated into a cockpit entirely focused on the tasks to be performed by the pilot.

Avionics 2020 was unveiled in June 2013 at Paris Air Show.

Shape, Immersive ATM Work Position

Shape is an immersive control system for air traffic controllers of the future. Advanced technology makes it possible to devise interactions with ATM systems that were unconceivable before.

Shape goes beyond most of the cutting-edge human-machine interfaces in ATM:

  • The control position’s immersive interface utilises multiple sensors to increase operator efficiency.
  • The human-machine interface provides information for users via all their senses, with a combination of eye tracking technologies, multi-touch surfaces and audio outputs, all modelled into an ergonomically designed console.

The heightened user experience results in an intuitive user interface which reduces reaction time and helps user decision processes.

Integrated Modular Power Electronics, for a more electrical and ecological aircraft

Recent breakthroughs in power electronics have given rise to new expectations:

  • power-to-weight ratios increase, combined with volume reduction,
  • reliability and availability improvements
  • better fault tolerance detection and analysis.

Using these new levels of performance, aircraft equipped with Thales ELS's Integrated Modular Power Electronics will achieve new standard in weight and cost savings. The IMPE is a scalable and modular power conversion system able to manage AC loads such as motors and electrical networks.

The Thales IMPE is an efficient solution which meets the needs linked to the increasing electrification of aircraft and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
