Thales helicopter helmet solutions on display at 2015 Army aviation Mission Solution Summit

Thales will be participating at the 2015 Army Aviation Mission solution summit taking place from 29th to 31st of March in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The latest helmet technologies for helicopter pilots – the TopOwl Helmet-Mounted Sight and Display and Scorpion Helmet-Mounted Cueing System – will be showcased on the Thales booth.

TopOwl® Helmet-Mounted Sight and Display

The TopOwl Helmet-Mounted Sight & Display is an invaluable tool for attack and transport helicopter pilots. Thanks to its unique visor projection technology, it places only necessary mission and flight control information right in front of their eyes at the right time, eliminating the need to look down at the instrument panel, a major advantage for flight safety and operational efficiency. It also displays intensified night vision. Thanks to integrated Image Intensifier Tubes (I²T) pilots can instantly switch between Day/Night/IR or Video images, retaining full symbology in their Field of View (FoV). Designed by helicopter pilots for helicopter pilots, TopOwl is a leap ahead of the pack, combining low risk with high performance.

Thales Group - TopOwl helmet

  • Installed and fully operational on six major helicopter types: Tiger, NH90, Rooivalk, Cobra AH-1Z, Huey UH-1Y and Turkish Attack helicopter T129.

Compared with conventional night vision solutions, TopOwl offers unmatched comfort and user-friendliness for optimal flight safety in tactical operations with the same level of performance in the dark of night.

With more than 1,000 systems delivered and more than 700 additional systems already on order, TopOwl is combat-proven on different theatres in Afghanistan (Italian, French and US Forces), in Libya and Mali (French Forces).

Scorpion® Helmet-Mounted Cueing System

The world’s first full color Helmet-Mounted Display System, the Scorpion HMCS provides dynamic flight and mission data, projected directly and safely into the aircrew line of sight via a large field-of-view, fully transparent, rugged, optical waveguide assembly. This capability allows the user to remain head-up and eyes-out of the cockpit with greatly enhanced real-time situation awareness. The added dimension of full color symbology and video imagery dramatically increases the user’s ability to rapidly interpret and correlate vital Situation Awareness (SA) information, resulting in lower task saturation and increased efficiency. In full-service operation on U.S. Air Force A-10 and F-16 aircraft, and recently selected by major helicopter OEMs, Scorpion has the battle-proven pedigree, demonstrated field performance, and provides ease of integration necessary for both forward-fit and retrofit applications—fixed and rotary wing.
