From take-off to landing, Thales offers the most complete range of solutions to address all Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) needs to provide dynamic Air traffic Control (ATC) to support today’s growing domestic and international travel requirements.
Thales Air Traffic Management Systems are highly adaptable and designed to support both current and future civil and military air traffic management needs.
In Australia, we provide our customers with the most adapted CNS/ATM solution, offering them a unique global ATM capability.
In 1994 Airservices Australia, responsible for Australia’s sovereign airspace, awarded Thales a contract to develop the Australian Advanced Air Traffic control System (TAAATS).
TAAATS was successfully delivered to Airservices Australia in 1997 and has been progressively updated to reflect changing technologies and requirements and as such is one of the world’s most advanced Air Traffic Management systems.
The Melbourne Centre of Excellence for Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems exports TopSky systems throughout Asia-Pacific region and beyond to Africa and Middle East. With 80% of revenue generated through exports, Thales Australia is a major Australian exporter with cumulative exports nearing A$1 billion since 1995.
Investment in Australia
Thales has invested in the development of software products and services in Melbourne that have been successfully exported worldwide. We remain dedicated to growing our Australian operations and engineering workforce as well as to continuing our significant contribution to the Australian economy.
Our Australian Graduate program assists with the development of the new generation of skilled people who will deliver the services necessary to supporting the future growth of the Australian based Aviation sector.
The Australian technical and industrial skills support global ATM systems.
In Asia Pacific
By the end of 1997, Thales had successfully completed the Australian Advanced Air Traffic System (TAAATS) for Airservices Australia and has been exporting the TopSky systems through the Asia Pacific region and beyond to Africa and the Middle East.
Thales TopSky solutions including Radars and Navaids are deployed in nearly all countries in Asia Pacific. Key customers utilising ATM systems in Asia Pacific include, but not limited to Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, French Polynesia, Philippines, China, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
Innovation
EXPLORING NEW TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH INNOVATION LABS
3 Labs worldwide, in Australia (CASIA), France (SkyCentre), and the US (NextGen Innovation Lab) have been created to reinforce research collaboration between universities, public research laboratories and leading industry players. These labs put forward innovative solutions to make air travel safer, more efficient and greener, while delivering a host of other benefits to local and international Air Navigation Service Providers.
CASIA (CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES IN ATM)
Inaugurated in March 2011 in Melbourne, Australia, CASIA is the latest of Thales’s innovation labs. This 400m², futuristic-looking creative workspace is dedicated to ATM and ATFM research focused on Asia Pacific.
It hosts demonstrations of the latest products and prototypes, as well as “traditional” R&D activities, such as new technologies integration or external systems interfacing.

NEXTGEN INNOVATION LAB
The Thales ATM NextGen Innovation lab was established in 2010 to address future concepts and initiatives specific to the U.S. FAA. In addition to providing a dedicated demonstration site for customers and industry partners, the facility provides Thales ATM engineers with an environment to conduct rapid prototyping activities and develop and test new concepts in the areas of data communications, automation and integrated air traffic tower applications.
At the facility, Thales ATM partners with industry in developing sustainable technology solutions for NextGen programs.
SKYCENTRE
Reinforcing the collaboration between research and customer needs since April 2009, a core team imagines and probes ATM innovative ideas jointly with technical, marketing, and communication teams for our European and global customers.
Our Products
Thales's comprehensive portfolio includes civil and military air traffic management systems for the large medium or small control centres, surveillance systems, communications systems and navigation aids to ensure a seamlesss gate-to-gate coverage, from departure to arrival.
