Unlocking the potential of drones.
“Thales on the whole Drone ecosystem” series. INTRODUCTION.
(access to other chapters at the end of this article)
Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have already transformed the commercial and military domains – and we are only at the beginning.
Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice President for Thales' land and air defence systems activities, outlines the rapid evolution of the UAS space, labelling them ‘a textbook example of how one technology can be used for completely different purposes, some good, some not so good'.
– Thales is actively involved in almost all UAS applications,
ensuring the consistency of our solutions with the UAS environment."

The opportunities cut across the commercial and military domains.
For example, UAS can be used for deliveries and emergency services in the commercial world or play a key role in surveillance and force protection for militaries.
"We have already demonstrated several use cases, one was that drones can be used to perform delivery. We wanted to focus on deliveries that are going to be useful, that positively impact the community. So, we performed the delivery of blood samples, as well as the delivery of medicine." Frank Erb, Director of Business Development for Thales' digital aviation activities in the Asia Pacific region
Other commercial or security use cases include monitoring wildlife, surveying rooftops to identify any defects in the buildings, assessing the heights of trees in an area, or revolutionized wildfire response
In the military domain,
recent conflicts have underscored the game-changing impact of UAS in modern warfare. The large-scale deployment of drones in the battlespace has demonstrated the huge opportunities for surveillance and protection of frontline forces.
