Maximum security in a complex risk environment

Drawing on extensive experience in the defence sector, Thales works with national governments, local authorities and large companies to protect citizens, property, sensitive data and critical infrastructure. We're helping to make the world a safer place and we're proud to be part of the solution to today's security challenges.

Unique credentials

Thales's role with the armed forces is to improve operational efficiency while providing the best possible protection. Today that role is increasingly relevant in the security sector too. Faced with multiple threats — terrorism, cybercrime, street crime, trafficking, illegal immigration, natural disasters, industrial accidents, etc. — governments, cities and essential operators must find just the right balance between the need for security and the quality of the services they provide.

Thales expertise spans the defence-security continuum. We work closely with all these stakeholders to develop integrated, resilient and scalable solutions that meet their operational requirements and enable them to manage new risks as they emerge. Positioned as a value-added systems integrator, Thales leverages the legacy solutions of each customer and incorporates the most advanced technologies — some of them developed for the military — to provide effective protection for people, property, sensitive data and infrastructure.

Thales generates annual revenues of €1.1 billion in the security sector, including €500 million in cybersecurity alone. With 5,000 people working on security projects and associated R&D, of whom 1,500 are dedicated cybersecurity experts, Thales has a unique set of credentials to address the needs of the fast-growing security market.

Protecting the four key domains

To assume this central role in the security of people, property and information, Thales has identified four key domains that need be protected:

  • States: surveillance of national territory, identity management, border control, etc.
  • Cities: urban security, smart cities, large-scale event management, professional radio communication systems, etc.
  • Critical infrastructure: protection of government sites, maritime ports, airports, rail and metro stations, oil and gas infrastructure, nuclear powerplants, public venues, prisons, holy sites, etc.
  • Cyberspace: consultancy and definition of information system security policies, implementation of security architectures, sensitive data protection solutions, operation of and cybersecurity for critical information systems, etc.

We believe that digital technologies can make the world a safer place and we have a record of success delivering large-scale security projects. These include the Ciudad Segura urban security programme in Mexico City, based on the intelligent use of over 15,000 videosurveillance cameras, integrated security for the new commercial port in Doha and its surrounding infrastructure, and physical and data security for the French Ministry of Defence’s new headquarters in the Balard district of Paris.

Alongside these flagship programmes, Thales also works with customers on smaller-scale projects, bringing them the benefits of a whole range of modular, scalable solutions to meet their security requirements in all circumstances.
