Dakar Train Express Regional Provides an Ultra-Modern Transport System

The Regional Express Train (Train Express Régional, or TER) Dakar is the largest project in the Republic of Senegal, and is part of the “Emerging Senegal” restructuring plan launched by the Senegalese government in 2014 to promote the country’s social and economic development.

The TER will link Dakar to the new Blaise Diagne international airport in less than 50 minutes. The airport rail link will then serve 14 stations on a 55 km route. Ridership is estimated at 115 000 passengers/day.

Thales and its partner Equans, together with suppliers such as SETEC, are proud to take part in this modern railway project to deliver all the technical rail systems.

The first section of the TER from Dakar to the suburban city of Diamniadio (35 km and 13 stations) was inaugurated by Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, on December 27, 2021.

The systems successfully delivered by Thales are among our most modern solutions, including:

  • Signalling solution ERTMS Level 2, which provides train traffic and speed supervision, with computer-controlled Interlockings (PIPC), Radio Block Center (RBC), axle counters (Azlm) for safe train detection, Traffic Control Center (CTC) and associated maintenance system
  • The global ticketing system, consisting of the TRANSCITYTM solution, with more than 60 Ticket Office Machines (TOM),  7 Ticket Vending Machines (TVM), and 150 gates
  • Real-time Passengers Information and Public Audio Systems in stations
  • Telecommunication MPLS system

Providing Dakar and its suburbs with an ultra-modern transport system featuring the most advanced technologies is key to release the congestion of the capital, which concentrates a fifth of the population and almost all of the country's economic activities, while ensuring the highest levels of safety, reliability, comfort and passenger service.
