Thales to provide video protection on 1,000 more Paris buses and tramways

Key points

  • Thales to equip a total fleet of 5,000 buses and trams for RATP.
  • 1,000 buses and trams equipped with new solution.
  • New solution incorporates latest video compression standards and offers superior performance and image quality.

Thales has signed a contract with Paris transport operator RATP, co-financed by the Paris regional transport authority, STIF, to equip 1,000 buses and trams with its new On Board Video 8000 solution. Since 2002, Thales has equipped close to 4,000 buses and trams operated by RATP.

This latest contract reflects RATP's continuing confidence in the technologies implemented by Thales and builds on more than 10 years of successful collaboration for the installation and maintenance of systems on 4,000 buses and trams.

These systems have a proven record of improving passenger safety and protecting property, acting as a deterrent to vandalism, assaults and antisocial behaviour on public transport.

Video protection systems are used to record, retrieve, analyse and exploit audiovisual information from cameras installed in passenger spaces.

This new solution from Thales incorporates the latest image compression standards, while remaining back-compatible with the previous-generation system. It also allows video metadata tagging, making it quicker and easier to search video footage and pursue investigations.

With its expertise in secured communication systems, Thales is providing a highly dependable and fully scalable solution based on certified hardware and tailored to the constraints of bus, rail and tram operations. In total, over 6,500 Thales videoprotection systems are in service on the Paris RER suburban rail network, operated by SNCF, the Transdev Paris East bus lines and the Bordeaux tram network in France.

Thales is a global leader in supervision, communications, passenger information and passenger safety and comfort solutions for the public transport sector. Every day, 30 million passengers in more than 20 cities around the world rely on Thales solutions.
