Local cooperation

Thales established a presence in Oman to actively engage  and support clients in-country. Over the course of the years, Thales has established multiple operational centres in the Sultanate, including those at:

  • Muscat airport, to serve the needs of airport projects and to support multimedia systems on board Oman Air’s fleet.
  • Wudam naval base, to provide equipment maintenance on Royal Omani Navy vessels and facilitate customer support.
  • Service Centre for Defence

In line with the country’s vision, Thales has increased localisation and in-country capabilities serving security, digital Identity and security, aerospace, defence and transportation sectors. The latest example is the strategic partnership between Thales Oman and the Advanced Cybersecurity Academy to strengthen in-country cybersecurity capabilities.

Defence

Since the initial cooperation with the Omani Army in the 1970s, Thales has deployed various solutions in the tactical communications field of radios, infantry vehicles and tactical networks. As a trusted partner of the Royal Army of Oman (RAO), Thales ensures connectivity and interoperability throughout the command and control decision chain. The Group has also been a long-term supplier to the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) with Thales combat management systems, radars, communication radios, tracking systems and other electronic systems in service across the RNO fleet. Thales equips the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO)’s Airbus helicopters and platforms with sensors, optronics and avionics.

Aerospace

With a relationship that spans over a decade, Thales is Oman Air’s inflight entertainment supplier of choice providing state-of-the-art AVANT IFE solutions across its entire fleet of A330, Boeing 737, 787 and 737 MAX.  Thales also supplied Instrument Landing (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (DVOR) systems to Muscat and Salalah international airports, as well as to five regional airports located in Sohar, Al Duqm, Adam, Ras Al Hadd and Haima.

Security

Thales has delivered state-of-the-art integrated security solutions to ensure the protection of both infrastructures and travelers at both Muscat International Airport and Salalah airports. Thales is the Master System Integrator (MSI) for both airports, providing an integrated security solution managed by an airport operation control centre including the perimeter intrusion detection system, video protection system, access control, screening equipment, security check points, access and backbone network along with data centres to ensure peak performance and quality of services.

Further solidifying the Group’s commitment to the national vision, Thales launched the Advanced Cybersecurity Academy (ACA) in partnership with the Oman’s Public Authority for Privatization and Partnership (PAPP). The ACA is the first technical training academy specialising in providing hands-on training in cybersecurity in Oman.

Digital identity and security

Powered by Thales Digital Identity and Security (DIS), solutions, Oman’s eGovernment project is one of the most comprehensive digital government programs. The modern IT infrastructure includes a National Register System as well as an Electronic Biometric Passport. The smartcard technology provides millions of Omanis with a single, convenient identity credential, incorporating driver’s license and border control functions.

In addition to carrying top-of-the-line security software, the Omani ePassports radically improve the speed and efficiency of border administrative processes and make travellers’ experiences more hassle-free.
