 High-power klystrons for Physics applications

Synchrotrons are used to accelerate and store hadrons and ions for both fundamental and applied research. Electron tubes from Thales are a key part of these machines, generating the powerful fields needed to accelerate and maintain their energy.

This latest generation of long-pulse klystrons specially designed by Thales as RF source for particle accelerators are used in physics applications. Particularly, they are currently installed in the Linac of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) built at Oak Ridge (USA). These klystrons are equipped with a diode electron gun and operate in vertical position. Their collector, body and output window are water-cooled. Beam focusing is provided by an electromagnet.
