At the end of 2023, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) launched the Queensland Digital Licence App, developed with Thales, Code Heroes and Aliva.

According to ABI Research, the app achieved a significantly higher adoption rate than other global mobile ID projects in 2024, reaching over 15% penetration. Powered by Thales’ Digital ID Services Platform, the app emphasizes security and privacy, integrating multi-factor authentication, the Queensland Digital Identity (QDI) service and secure verification features. Users control their data for transactions such as proof of age. Currently, it offers digital driver licences, proof of age, and marine licences; businesses can verify information using the QLD Verifier app.

This app marks Australia’s first digital licence to align with international standards for mobile driver licences with adherence to ISO/IEC 18013-5 fosters interoperability, setting a global standard for secure mobile driver licences.
