Thales Optronics selected on Thermal Imaging export programs of seven countries

Key points

  • Thales selected on the Thermal Imaging programs of seven countries
  • Contracts exceed CAD $40 million for 2,000 military-grade thermal imagers
  • 20 full-time highly-skilled jobs secured in the Montreal Optronics facility for at least the next five years

The orders will see a range of Canadian developed and manufactured imaging systems used in military vehicle programs, leveraging initial successes on Canadian vehicle programs since 2007.

Thales is on a quick development track bringing new products to market using the latest in non-ITAR technologies, proudly designed and manufactured in Canada.  The orders will include Driver Vision Enhancers (DVEs) and Thermal Imagers (TIMs).

The contracts will secure 20 full-time highly-skilled jobs in the Montreal optronics facility for at least the next five years

“These orders are a result of Thales’ commitment to investment in Canada which is a Thales global centre of excellence for uncooled optronics.  These vision systems provide enhanced protection and situational awareness for ground troops around the world where military and command vehicles operate in dense environments and poor weather – day and night.” said Mark Halinaty, President and CEO, Thales Canada Inc.

Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) Land Imager to be unveiled at CANSEC

Thales will also unveil its first Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging system at CANSEC – the VEM-SWIR.

Thales is evolving a family of building blocks addressing the use of the SWIR technology in the Land, Airborne and Naval domains. SWIR complements the use of traditional thermal imaging and enables users to gather additional information on the scene of interest.

The applications range from military detection to civilian applications such as equipment for degraded visual environment for airborne platforms and chemical detection aboard UAVs.
