Thales always applies an approach where collaboration with national partners is included in the business model. In the Norwegian defence market, the most advanced solutions delivered by industrial players have emerged from collaboration between industry, academic- and research institutions together with the Armed Forces.

This triangular cooperation allows short and effective communication lines and has created a highly competitive and modern defence industry, which Thales is a part of. To grow the position as market leader within secure communication, space and aerospace, Thales works closely with our Norwegian customers and partners.

Thales cooperates with several academic institutions in Norway to support and attract future generations of engineers.

Thales Norway provides Norwegian Armed Forces with high grade crypto and is the principal supplier of IP encryption to NATO.

In May 2021, the Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA) signed an agreement with the Netherlands Commando Materieel en IT (COMMIT) for five Thales Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact (GM200 MM/C) radars, which has later been increased to a total of 8.

Furthermore, Thales has delivered the naval SATCOM solutions for NANSEN-class frigates, SKJOLD-class, Corvettes, Coast Guard vessels and 212CD sub-marines and in 2025, Thales signed a contract for the midlife upgrade of the Nansen Class frigates.

Civil Aviation

In 2021, Thales won a global competition to deliver conflict detection and anti-collision software to the Air Traffic Management (ATM) in Avinor Air Navigation Services AS. The software is called TopSky-Safety Nets, a part of our solution for ATM called TopSky-Air Traffic Control. TopSky-Safety Nets helps the air traffic controllers detect potential conflicts in a very early stage, with fewer false alarms. In this way we contribute to even safer journeys for passengers in the Norwegian airspace.

In 2024 Thales and Avinor partnered to implement Norway’s next-generation nationwide Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system, enhancing airspace management for both unmanned and manned aircraft while ensuring full compliance with European regulatory standards.

Since 2016, Thales in Norway had a training and simulation center in Stavanger. The training center meets the demand for training services for helicopter pilots in areas like Defence, Search & Rescue operations (SAR), Air Ambulance and Oil & Gas.
