Thales @ Farnborough

Thales is one of the major exhibitors at the Farnborough International Airshow, demonstrating how the Group's digital transformation and customer-focused innovation is revolutionizing the markets we serve.
The aviation industry is driving digital transformation

The 63rd edition of the Farnborough Airshow is focused on digital challenges. Whether in terms of civil or military aviation or the space industry, the words on everyone's lips are connectivity, Big Data management and the issue of cybersecurity.

The digital revolution, which began almost a quarter of a century ago, has had a huge impact on everyone's lifestyle. Almost instantaneous access to a vast quantity of information, wherever you are in the world or however you access it, has led to a global society that is open to the entire world.

The world of aviation and space is on the front line of this revolution. It must adapt to the increasingly high standards set by its customers throughout the value chain, and manage the arrival of new players who can offer breakthrough solutions based on new forms of digital technology.

All the players in the civil and military segment of aviation and space, are developing digital technologies more and more quickly. Interoperability among people and equipment, access to information and tools to help with decision-making, wherever you are and whatever system you are using: connectivity is crucial for civil and military aviation, both in flight and on the ground.

This connectivity requires the installation of secure, non-hackable lines of communication. And yet this connectivity requires the installation of secure, non-hackable lines of communication between aircraft, as well as between aircraft and ground and satellite controls. In this sense, the question of cybersecurity is crucial, as much in the civil as in the military context. Whether it is about preventing the hacking of a drone or civil aircraft by a terrorist group or enemy power, the issue is the same.

Cyber attacks, cyber warfare, cyber security ?

For the last decade or so, the vulnerability of information and communication systems has been the key focus of all governments, businesses and the aviation sector in particular.

Military aviation and its associated defence organisations exist in a very compartmentalised environment, with few vulnerabilities. Yet vulnerabilities do exist. Once identified, they may be used by a State (or a non-state player, etc.) in a period of conflict.

Thales, which secures 80% of dematerialised transactions in the world, is particularly well-positioned to be able to provide a monitoring and associated cybersecurity protection. Particularly as the Group, which is one of the European leaders in defence, has a global and additional vision of cyber security and potential cyber attacks, whatever sector is involved.

Our Cybersecurity team operates and supervises critical information systems for over 130 customers globally, and our solutions have been chosen by demanding countries including 27 NATO members. In the air we ensure safe flights and the secure flow of intelligence from the Watchkeeper Unmanned Aerial System, and in rotary wing platforms, keep the Chinook’s Mk6 digital cockpit safe and secure. We enable closer collaboration between Aerospace companies, national and European organisation’s, their suppliers and their customers with the AirCollab solution from BoostAeroSpace.

At Farnborough 2016, we are showcasing in the Digital Transformation space on the Thales pavilion, highlighting how ‘Cyber Secured by Design ensures that our airspace, aerial platforms and communications technologies are cyber secured. Each day, you can discover a new example of the impact of digital transformation on the aerospace industry.
