In the domain of control & signalling technology for local and long-distance rail transport, Thales is one of the leading providers of trackside equipment worldwide. The Group’s solutions include electronic interlocking systems, train protection systems and axle counters.
We are also a leading provider of the European Train Control System (ETCS). Thanks to the successful realisation of a number of large-scale projects, Thales has developed a team of recognised specialists in the field of train control installations in Switzerland, and has built a competence centre for interoperability services (IOP services) for ETCS-compliant solutions. Thales’ ETCS solution ensures the continuous transfer of information between the track and the train, enabling continuous monitoring and control of permitted speeds.
In 2003, Thales won a contract to equip the thirty-five kilometre Lötschberg Base Tunnel with rail signalling solutions. The tunnel, consisting of the Group’s ETCS Level 2 train control system, consequently opened in 2007. More recently, as a partner of the Transtec Gotthard consortium, Thales supplied the entire signalling infrastructure of the longest rail tunnel in the world; the 57 kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel.
The 15.4 kilometre long Ceneri Base Tunnel is the final section of the transalpine corridor. Again, Thales has been awarded for the installation of the signalling solutions and has the overall responsibility for project management, integration and commissioning of the train command and control systems. The tunnel is due to open in 2020. hales is to supply the entire signalling infrastructure.
