Thales sponsors an academic chair to create tomorrow's data engineers

Thales is partnering with France's Ecole Polytechnique, along with Keyrus and Orange, to create an academic chair devoted to Big Data sciences. The aim of the 'Data Scientist' chair is to promote the creation of new engineering curricula, from which will emerge the talents in Big Data sciences that are an unmet demand in a growing number of companies today.

The new chair will be co-managed by Ecole Polytechnique and Télécom ParisTech. In-house training programs will also be offered to active professionals. Sponsors Keyrus, Orange and Thales will provide internships and scholarships, as well as take part in prize-giving events.

A further objective of this initiative is to encourage research in Big Data sciences, by bringing together resources from the academic and corporate worlds. Research that will be encouraged as part of the Data Scientist chair will include the development of new algorithms to address the increasing requirements of Big Data.

According to Transparency Market Research, the worldwide business of Big Data should grow by 40% annually, from $8.9 billion (€7.8 billion) in 2013 to $24.6 billion (€22 billion) in 2016. In France, Big Data will generate €9 billion of business and 130.000 jobs in 2020.
