Grand Paris Express, the world's 4th largest infrastructure project

THE CONTEXT

The Grand Paris Express project has selected Thales to enhance the passenger experience on its new rapid transit metro lines. The project comprises four new lines (15, 16, 17 and 18), which will connect the suburbs around the city of Paris. A total of 200 kilometres of new tracks and 68 new stations are to be added, serving a projected 2 million passengers a day. This makes it the largest transport infrastructure project in Europe. And once completed, it will double the size of the Paris’ existing metro system.

COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Out of the four new lines, Thales, along with two SMEs, was contracted by the Société du Grand Paris to supply passenger safety and comfort solutions on lines 15, 16 and 17. The solution includes video protection, passenger information, interphone, onboard public address and automatic passenger counting system.
The latest-generation systems installed on board the trains will enhance passenger safety and improve the passenger experience by providing permanent access to travel information, multimedia content and connectivity services

TICKETING SYSTEMS

Furthermore, Thales and EASIER, a division of IER were selected to provide the revenue collection system for all lines of the Grand Paris Express metro systems. Together, they will design and deliver new ticket vending and validation machines and integrate these systems into the existing Île-de-France Mobilités ticketing ecosystem.
This contract comes as Île-de-France Mobilités seeks to modernise its ticketing infrastructure. The machines on the four new Grand Paris Express lines will be contactless-ready, bringing the phasing-out of conventional magnetic-stripe cardboard tickets a step closer.
