First Thales ETCS Level 2 project successfully put into operation in Hungary

The Hungarian State Railways MÁV puts into operation Thales ETCS Level 2 for the very first time in Hungary. For one of the modernized sections, the Hungarian National Infrastructure Development Company (NIF) trusts on Thales solutions.

A Thales ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 system at Székesfehérvár station on the frequent Budapest - Székesfehérvár railway line 30 could be successfully put into operation today. This was the final piece for the complete line to be equipped with ETCS Level 2. Thanks to ETCS Level 2, the line achieves European interoperability standards and train speed can be increased up to 160 km/h.

Using ETCS Level 2, the train is continuously reporting its exact position and direction via the railway network GSM-R to a so-called Radio Block Centre (RBC), which is calculating and sending movement authorities to the trains. These are the major differences to ETCS Level 1, which has already been in use in Hungary.

This step towards ETCS Level 2 brings new challenges but also new opportunities for the Hungarian and international Railways. Thales is proud to have supported MÁV and NIF in this decisive moment with the successful putting into operation of Székesfehérvár station. We will continue to support the Hungarian Railways on this journey to further strengthen the passengers’ trust in railway transport in Hungary.
