    About the Role
     

    As part of the Thales Australia Safety Engineering Group, you will primarily undertake system safety programs and conduct safety engineering activities across various Thales Maritime programs.  The main business unit supported will be Maritime, however support is often required for other Thales business units consisting of Avionics (AVS), Ground Transport Systems (GTS), Secure Communications and Information Systems (SIX), Protected Vehicles, Armaments, Optronics (Land) and Air Traffic Management (ATM).

     

    This role provides a unique opportunity to be part of diverse team of Safety and Human Factors experts working on a complex and diverse range of safety programs with internal and external customers.     Some of the key responsibilities for the role include:
    • Manage and develop  the system safety program during the bid phase.
    • Manage the safety deliverables from external subcontractors in accordance with the contract and appropriate standards, which may include auditing and reviewing subcontractors’ system safety programs.
    • Conduct functional safety engineering activities for hardware and or software products development programs.
    • Derive safety requirements and ensure that they are adequately captured in functional, allocated and product baseline specifications.
    • Conduct appropriate hazard analysis campaigns commensurate with the processes, standards and best practices employed by specific industries and business domains. 
    • Work with designs teams and the Project Design Authority to implement system architectures and development assurance practices that eliminate or minimise risk to ensure product compliance to applicable hardware and software system safety standards. 
    • Chair System Safety Working Groups (SSWG) and Safety Review Boards (SRB) and Safety Workshops as appropriate.
     

    To be successful in this role you will have some if not all of the below:

    • Relevant tertiary qualification (Systems Safety / Engineering / Engineering / Human Factors)
    • Significant experience in a similar systems safety focused role
    • Demonstrated knowledge across systems safety and knowledge of relevant tools / techniques and standards with experience of managing a safety program
    • Defence system safety programs in accordance with MIL-STD 882E, DefAust 5679 Issue 2.
    • Functional safety standards including IEC-61508, IEC 61511and ISO 26262 and EUROCONTROL “SAM” methodology
    • Software safety standards including DO-278/ED 109, ED-153, DO-178C
    • Working knowledge of system safety tools and techniques including Fault Tree Analyses, Event Tree Analysis, Goal Structured Notation, SWIFT, HAZOP, Safety Instrumented System design.
    • Passion for all things safety with an eye for detail and overall rigorous approach
