Templecombe 'Ironman' completes Canadian challenge

A super fit employee from Templecombe has completed a world championship Ironman event in Canada in support of the Alzheimer's Society.

Steve Green completed the gruelling 2014 Ironman 70.3 event in Quebec in just under five hours despite suffering from a long-standing hamstring injury that had to be treated and strapped just before the actual event. The event involved  a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and a half marathon to finish.

I was really happy with the time of four hours and 56 minutes, it put me 50th in my age group out of a total of 135 competitors."

The Strategic Purchasing Manager has completed previous world championships in Florida and Las Vegas, and rated the Canadian event at Tremblant as his favourite in terms of conditions.

Steve, 51, says: "The weather and temperatures were almost perfect; Vegas had the heat and Florida had the heat and humidity, so to have no wind and a bit of cloud cover was just great. It wasn ‘t easy though, there was a pretty tough 24% incline in one section of the run which included cobblestones, but I’m pleased. The hamstring didn’t go, so that was a bonus!

"I have to pay tribute to the race organisers – there were 2,000 volunteers out there. The official race cut-off was seven hours and one competitor in the 80 plus age group came in at 10 hours and they were still there cheering him on!"

A dedicated charity fundraiser, Steve has raised thousands of pounds for company-supported charities, as well as numerous local charities in the southwest of England. He also took part in the Thales Grand Depart cycle challenge in support of Alzheimer's in July.
