Thales technology Enables Fisheries Science Research on New Canadian Coast Guard Vessel

Thales is honoured to celebrate the delivery of the second operational vessel under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, the CCGS Capt. Jacques Cartier, to the Canadian Coast Guard.

Equipped to carry out science research missions, the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel, one of the most advanced and capable ships of its size and type in the world, will serve an important role in monitoring the health of fish stocks, understanding the impacts of climate change and supporting research that allows us to better understand our oceans.

Thales is an important part of the NSS, responsible for the selection, procurement and integration of the electronic systems and equipment on the vessels being constructed, in addition to the design, development and installation activities. This includes the integrated systems that support the science mission of the vessel, as well as the integrated bridge, navigation and communication systems.

Under the NSS, Thales has generated significant economic impact across the country, working with more than 70 suppliers across eight provinces from coast-to-coast. A Top 100 Canadian corporate R&D investor, Thales is committed to developing Canadian talent, creating Canadian jobs, and supporting the domestic shipbuilding industry at-large.

“As Seaspan Shipyards’ Electronic Systems Integrator, Thales is proud to have helped deliver this state-of-the-art science vessel to the Canadian Coast Guard, enabling important research for decades to come,” said Mark Halinaty, President and CEO of Thales Canada. “Together with our valued suppliers, we are committed to using our expertise to help build the next generation of non-combat ships for Canada.”

Thales has been contracted by Seaspan Shipyards as the Electronic Systems Integrator for three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels, two Joint Support Ships and one Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel.
